Statement to voters

“I’m standing to be the Dyfed Powys Police and Crime Commissioner because I think we need to fundamentally re-think the way we do policing in rural Wales.

Full statement

I think as a young person, I have a distinct advantage in this race – because of a unique appreciation of the issues young people face – and I’m looking forward to making that case over the weeks to come.

“I want to put a strong emphasis on community policing, in order to work with local communities to help tackle the causes of crime. For instance, I’d shift resources away from criminalizing individual drug users in favour of tackling the scourge of ‘County Lines’ drug dealing. Despite the best efforts of the police this remains a huge issue for us in rural Wales and only a community policing approach will keep officers' fingers on the pulse of this issue.

“I’d like to see better rehabilitation services. Locking people up then letting them out to fall back into their old ways won’t solve the problem. We need to help people build a life for themselves to break the cycle of re-offending.

“If elected, I would also slim down on the costs of the role of Police and Crime Commissioner and campaign for its abolition. These roles were created by the Conservative government, without public consent and have done nothing to improve policing or accountability. I want to see powers over youth justice, probation services, prisons and policing devolved to allow Wales to create an effective, liberal, community-based approach to policing and tackling crime."
