My name is Simran Patel, and I am running to be your Councillor.
Full statement
The recent national election confirmed to me, and I suspect many of you, that a new era is here - Labour is over, Reform is not welcome, and the future is Green. I am inspired by the momentum the party has gained, and am eager to build on this and effect change on the local level.
I live in Splott and thoroughly enjoy the vibrance of the local community, from Splo-down, to Oasis, to Railway Gardens. As a councillor, it would be a priority to strengthen networks and support these vital initiatives. I would also work to improve on infrastructure, specifically fixing potholes on our roads. As a keen environmentalist, I aim to make homes more energy efficient (thereby reducing bills for residents) and keep our streets clean and safe. Above all, I would ensure all residents' voices are heard. This role is a community service and I would be a reliable representative, holding regular surgeries and always being available and approachable.
My background is in Law and Sociology which gives me broad knowledge into the workings of local government. I have valuable experience in organising, public speaking, and have volunteered extensively for social justice causes such as the climate crisis, gender equality, migrant solidarity, and racial advocacy. I have always been intrigued by social politics; growing up as a working class, queer woman of colour provided me with a unique understanding of marginalisation, and how systems can help or hinder those they are meant to work for. I am passionate about collective action, and I will always stand strong against injustice.
In all honesty, I had not considered myself the right “type” of person to be a councillor. Very few in these positions look like me, a racialised queer woman at the start of her career. But as someone said to me recently, we need more “normal” people in politics. I know what it's like to worry about rising rent and bills, and I am no stranger to hard work given I am currently juggling multiple minimum wage hospitality jobs.
Therefore, I believe I would be a great councillor. Labour have had their time and now we need a change. A Green councillor would hold Labour to account, and wouldn’t be told what to do or say by a party that has to work in the interests of their billionaire donors. I bring with me a fresh hunger and a willingness to commit 100% of my time and energy to representing Splott, Tremorfa, and Pengam Green while continually reinforcing the values of the Green Party. I would be honoured for the opportunity to serve this community, and hope I have earned your vote to be your Councillor.
