Candidate pledges

Hope Not Hate, a London-based charity, canvassed local residents and community organisations to establish the following questions to the candidates in this ward.

How will you improve the social infrastructure on Alpha Road Estate?

We would seek to work with residents to establish what they think is required to improve the social structure of the Alpha Road Estate. This might mean better play areas, more youth facilities, access to shops and healthcare, but it would also mean looking at the fabric of the homes on the estate and fully supporting the residents to have a voice that is meaningful.

How will you ensure there is a council-run and government-funded advice service which will help EU nationals register for settled status? And will you pledge your support for EU nationals to keep their right to vote after 29 March 2019?

There are several organisations in Kingston that are funded by the Council currently who could provide support, advice and help to EU Nationals during the Brexit period and after. We would ensure these are properly funded and staffed with experts available to EU nationals as well as any other nationalities who wanted to settle in the UK. If you live, work and pay taxes in the UK, you should be able to vote here.

Should 16 years olds have the right to vote? Please elaborate on your answer.

It is Labour Party policy that 16 year-olds should have the right to vote. It is important all politicians remember that decisions made today will affect young people in the future so they should have a say in those decisions.
