Anita Margaret Schaper was the Liberal Democrats candidate. Find out more about their policies from the Liberal Democrats Kingston upon Thames local election Local manifesto.
Hope Not Hate, a London-based charity, canvassed local residents and community organisations to establish the following questions to the candidates in this ward.
How will you improve the social infrastructure on Alpha Road Estate?
We are actively listening to residents since we started our campaign. Last year we secured funding for Security Entry Systems on 8 blocks that had no security and was troubled with anti-social behaviour. We are talking to other residents about parking issues presently and also other reports of ASB. By forging relationships with residents, their associations and interests groups we will help shape social infrastructure improvements.
We recognise the need for additional schools across Kingston. We are seeking to build 3 new schools and will work to ensure that Berrylands/Alpha Road has adequate provision. A dementia. We will work to ensure the Dementia Centre in Berrylands is delivered by 2020. If elected we will help build relationships between local voluntary groups (e.g Scouts, Surbiton Running Clubs to involve Alpha Road residents.
How will you ensure there is a council-run and government-funded advice service which will help EU nationals register for settled status? And will you pledge your support for EU nationals to keep their right to vote after 29 March 2019
Berrylands candidates will work with fellow Liberal Councillors and National MP to support the provisions of EU nationals advice service. Two of us have EU National partners so are very close to this issue. Yes to the right to vote.
Should 16 years olds have the right to vote? Please elaborate on your answer.
Yes. As 16 year olds can be taxed then they should be able to vote. 16-18 years old having a say on the countries future increases political participation through engaging with parents/relatives/others (as for the Scottish Referendum) . This age groups turn out was 75% - so the interest is clearly there.
