Statement to voters

Dear Neighbour, Over the last four years as a Town Councillor and many years before that working as a local schoolteacher, I have forgotten the number of people telling me that Abingdon and the Vale of the White Horse are wonderful places to live and work.

Full statement

We have world-class businesses and educational establishments on our doorstep; our schools are among the best in the country, we enjoy rapidly improving local services, and our countryside and town are beautiful and ever more welcoming places.

I am proud of our Conservative-led District and Town Councils' record of improving services, while managing to keep council tax low: Abingdon Town Council has frozen our council tax charge to the same level as last year - for the third year running!

Maintaining a vibrant town is key to many people’s everyday lives. Shops, businesses and bus routes keep opening, and Conservatives will uphold our pledge for two hours’ free parking in Abingdon, encouraging people to spend more time here and supporting the local economy. People visit our new cinemas; hire our refurbished historic local government buildings in the Guildhall and enjoy the facilities we’ve enhanced in the Abbey Meadows: the Swimming Pool, the Splash Pad, the children’s Play Area and the improved toilets, now accessible to all. These are great examples of what our Conservative-led local Councils have achieved for local people. They are strong foundations we have laid for the future.

I want to be part of building that future and, with your support on Thursday 2nd May, together we will ensure everybody in our community continues to enjoy a great quality of life.

One concern raised with me has been local housing development. I believe any new developments must work well for the people in our community. Developers must pay for necessary, new or enhanced infrastructure, and with our Local Plan now firmly drawn up, we will control speculative developments and provide affordable and much-needed new homes in the right places.

If there is anything I can do for you, or you would like to get in touch, my contact details are on this website.

Yours sincerely,

David
