Statement to voters

It’s time we had an MP who genuinely loves our area.

Full statement

Who looks to bring communities together, not drive them apart. Ely & East Cambridgeshire has it all from high tech businesses around the edges of Cambridge to the highly rural fen edge areas. It includes the city of Ely and the fringe of the city of Cambridge, two towns (Soham & Littleport) and many villages.

No matter where residents live, time and again I hear the same issues on the doorstep People are struggling to see a doctor or dentist when they need one. Long waits to get a GP appointment and it’s well nigh impossible to register with an NHS dentist.

Houses whether to rent or buy are expensive here. And I’m very concerned about the poor state of repair of some housing association properties in East Cambs People worry about anti-social behaviour and rarely report it because they fear that no-one will care and nothing will be done.

Residents are concerned about the climate crisis and more than half of people in our area live in homes that are poorly insulated and expensive to heat And over and over people who never thought they’d have financial difficulties are having to make hard decisions about paying their bills. Their wages have fallen well behind prices.

These are the issues we must address and ones that I care deeply about. I’m proud of Labour’s plans for office which tackle these issues head on. I strongly believe that the job of an MP is to represent the voices of residents to the Government and not the other way around.

I will always listen to local people and involve community groups and local businesses in helping to turn Labour’s plans into reality. I’m already working to address some of these issues such as securing repairs for tenants, trying to prevent anti-social driving in local car parks and campaigning for local councils to sign up to the Real Living Wage.

I plan to be a true constituency MP. I have lived here for nearly 20 years and will have my office here too.
