Plymouth governance referendum

On Thursday 17 July 2025 , voters in Plymouth able to vote in a governance referendum.

The question you will be asked on the ballot paper is:

How would you like Plymouth City Council to be run?

By a leader, who is an elected councillor chosen by a vote of the other elected councillors. This is how the Council is run now.
or
By a mayor, who is elected by voters. This would be a change from how the Council is run now.

  • You should get a "poll card" through the post telling you where to vote.

    If you haven't got one, or aren't sure where to vote, you should call Plymouth City Council on 01752 304866.

  • You will need to take photo ID to vote at a polling station in this election

    You do not need your poll card to vote. You must vote at your assigned polling station.

    If you do not have a photo ID that allows you to vote, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate
