Members of the Common Council are elected by the wards of the City of London every four years. Each ward returns between two and 10 members depending on the size of the electorate.
Councillors take the major strategic decisions that direct the work of the City Corporation. They sit on a variety of committees that manage the organisation’s different functions. The whole Common Council usually meets every four weeks. Its main business focuses on the reports of committees and members' questions and motions.

City of London council elections do not use the same electoral register as other elections.
Both residents and city workers are eligible to vote. There is one register published annually, and the deadline to apply is 30 November each year. The new register comes into force on 16 February each year, and cannot be modified after that date.
