Statement to voters
Hugh Jackson, our UKIP candidate for North of Tyne Mayor was born in Corbridge, raised in Gateshead and graduated in Newcastle. From University he joined the regular army as an officer adding management experience to his growing portfolio of talent.
Settling in North Tyneside after his spell serving his country, Hugh utilised his skills working with the Territorial Army before moving on to a career in teaching. He found that helping develop the skills and talents of young people was very rewarding.
Hugh's introduction to politics came when he was elected as a Conservative Councillor on North Tyneside Council and became the Council representative on the North East Assembly and the Court of Newcastle University. He was also elected to the role of Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee. Hugh says that "varied roles within the local council gave me an invaluable insight and understanding of the workings of local government"
Hugh has a lot of drive and enthusiasm and aims to focus his attention on attracting to the region state of the art industries, particularly in the renewable energy sector to the region to utilise talented youngsters in the area. The development of a Centre of Excellence for Engineering and Manufacturing is one of Hugh's priorities for the North of Tyne area. It will complement the industries that have come to develop and produce renewable energy hardware.
