Full statement
CANVEY!
My name is Paul Harbord and I am asking you to please support me with your vote so I can fight for you on Castle Point Borough Council.
I am a husband, a proud father of two, and a local Scout volunteer. I have spent most of my life managing facilities for big companies. I am now semi-retired and work as a handyman around the Island. I always speak my mind and I believe in hard graft.
Every councillor on Canvey and the mainland are part of the same ruling I dependant party group. There is no-one there to challenge them on their decisions. There is no-one there to ask questions like what happened to the £20 Million out MP Rebecca Harris got for us a year ago to regenerate the town centre? Why have they done nothing to restore Canvey Lake? What happened to the ‘Canvey West Access Taskforce’ to start the work on getting a third road for the island?
If I am elected I will ask the questions we need answered and I won’t stop fighting hard to make sure your voice is heard.
SAVE CANVEY LAKE - Canvey Lake is treasured by everyone on the island and is a haven for wildlife. Since taking over the lake, Canvey Island Independent Party have let it turn into a toxic mess every summer. Thousands of fish and birds have been killed and sometimes the water quality gets so bad it’s a risk to humans and pets. It’s a disgrace! I pledge to fight to make them dredge the lake and pass decisions about its future to a community group who will restore it to its former glory.
TACKLE THE TRAFFIC - Every day I sit in traffic driving off and on Canvey. Like everyone else, I am sick of it! Every year the Council lets more and more houses and flats be built on Canvey and does nothing to get the extra infrastructure that we need to cope with it. The Canvey Island Independent Party that run the Council need to bring back the Cnavey West Access Taskforce and I will not stop fighting until they give us the infrastructure we need to tackle the traffic.
REOPEN THE SPLASH PARK - The Canvey Island Independent Party pledged to reopen the Splash Park when they took over Castle Point Borough Council. Three years later, and is has been left to rot. I say enough is enough! If they don’t want to spend the money to reopen it, they should let a local company or community group have it. Reopen it and let Canvey families enjoy in summer.
SAY NO TO UP TO 1,288 MORE HOUSES AND FLATS ON CANVEY - Last year our Canvey Island Independent Party run Council published an lOptions Plan” of where up to 1,288 new houses and flats could go on Canvey. canvey’s roads cannot cope now. I am sick of the Council allowing developers to build more and more flats and houses when we don’t have the infrastructure to support it. It seems like the current Canvey Councillors don’t drive on our roads or visit Doctors surgeries! I will oppose and new homes that do not come with the extra infrastructure we desperately need.
The Canvey Island Independant Party have run Castle Point Borough Council for three years. They pledged to put Canvey first but they have failed at every turn. Do you think the Island has got better over the last three years?
I am known for speaking my mind and will be a strong and common sense voice for you. I will fight for a better future for Canvey and every family who lives on it. This is a very important LOCAL ELECTION and I do hope you will help me fight for Canvey, and for you, by supporting me with your vote.
Yours Soncerely,
Paul Harbord
