Statement to voters

I have spent my career working to help others, as a senior advisor in brilliant British charities such as the RNLI.

Full statement

I absolutely love my work but I know that the best way to make the biggest difference is with a Labour government.

I am not from a typical political family. My dad left school at 15 to train to be an electrician. Encouraged by my mum, a primary school teacher, he later went back into further education and spent his career helping others to do the same. This shaped my passion for removing the barriers to opportunity so we can all get on and build a better future. I want there to be no barriers to limit the ambitions of children in each and every one of our classrooms across South East Cornwall.

Recently I spent several years caring for a family member throughout a long illness, feeling like we were trying to move mountains the entire time when all we were trying to do was get the care we needed. It was clear that our NHS is on its knees but I know it doesn't have to be like this and I will be a fierce advocate for improvements to healthcare provision.

As an economic development professional I have worked to deliver change from Westminster to the UN and I will use my experience to deliver positive results for our communities. I will campaign hard to ensure that this beautiful part of the world benefits from improvements to public services and is positioned to take advantage of future economic opportunities within a strong national and local economy that works for working people.

I pledge to improve the lives of people in South East Cornwall by;

Tackling the serious shortage of NHS doctors and nurses at Treliske and Derriford by closing tax loopholes and using the money to train thousands more doctors, nurses and urgently needed NHS dentists.

Fixing South East Cornwall's Housing Crisis by building genuinely affordable homes with prices linked to local wages, banning no-fault evictions for renters and disincentivizing second homes.

End the cost of living crisis by reducing energy bills with a proper windfall tax on the huge profits of oil and gas companies and giving people more security at work by banning zero hour contracts.

Boost the local economy by taking advantage of new opportunities in industries such as Cornish renewable energy to develop skills, apprenticeships and good jobs here at home.

Protect our environment by setting up the publicly owned GB Energy, investing in green industry and cleaning up our beaches with a legally binding end to sewage discharges by 2030 and personal fines for water bosses who break these rules.
