Statement to voters
Living in London for many years and originally from Argentina, Jo Dowbor is of mixed Polish, English and Latin heritage, and a community organiser with nine years of frontline activism and a proven record of supporting those around her.
Full statement
Jo has worked closely with disabled people, migrants, refugees and people experiencing homelessness, supporting some of the most marginalised members of our community in Islington. She understands firsthand how difficult it can be to access services, to be heard, and to secure basic dignity — and that lived experience drives her politics.
As a trained union organiser, a volunteer with Care4Calais and Cosmos and an active member of multiple local groups such as Defend the Whittington Hospital Coalition and Islington Homes for All, Jo has built campaigns, done field work and mobilised communities to win real change.
In 2024, Jo stood as a Green Party candidate in the Hornsey by-election, where she came second and tripled the Green vote share. She has also supported Green candidates across the country, helping to grow their presence and win elections.
Her activism has included organising major demonstrations on international justice and leading mobilisations against the far right, including the protest outside the Thistle Barbican Hotel in 2025. She co-founded Greens for Palestine in January 2024 and helped draft and strategise the motion that recognised genocide in Gaza and committed the Green Party to BDS. This helped position the Greens as a clear pro-Palestine voice in UK politics and inspired many new members to join.
If elected, Jo would be among the first-generation Latinx councillors in the country, bringing vital representation and lived experience into local government.
Jo is committed to working collaboratively with fellow Green and Independent councillors to resist austerity, defeat the far right, and serve — not rule — the people of Islington. She is a strong supporter of Jeremy Corbyn, who remains one of her biggest political inspirations.
