Statement to voters

I am married to a Highland lass from Easter Ross; we have two grown up sons and two young grandsons.

Full statement

In 1988 we moved to the Highlands and built a house in the Dingwall area where we still live. I have worked in the construction sector for most of my working life and as such have travelled extensively. My oldest son was born in Hong Kong and my youngest finished the last three years of his schooling in New York.
For the last twenty years I have been a self-employed consultant providing constructability and budgetary advice, estimating and planning for underground structures and deep foundations. During that time, I have been involved in projects such as Thames Tideway (London’s Super Sewer), Crossrail, HS2, Sizewell C and Lower Thames Crossing in the UK and The World Trade Centre, Fulton Street Transit Centre, and California High Speed Rail in the USA.
I invented a system for simplifying the construction and improving the performance of a specialised geotechnical process and together with an Italian foundation contractor and a worldwide engineering consultancy was awarded a €2.4 million grant by the EU to develop and trial the system.
Apart from voting at elections, I have never been actively involved in politics. But the appalling record of the SNP here in Scotland, the pathetic performance of the May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak governments and the election of a labour government who clearly are out of their depth made me so angry that I decided I should try and do something about it.
In October 2024 I joined Reform UK. In May 2025 I became the interim Chair of the Highlands and Islands Branch of Reform UK and am now standing in the upcoming Scottish elections for the Orkney Islands constituency.
I first visited Orkney 45 years ago when my, soon to be wife, took me to meet her grandmother who lived in Stromness. Over the last 15 years I have come to Orkney six to eight times both to visit my wife’s relations and for holidays, so I do have an affinity for both the place and its people.
