Statement to voters

Alexander John Paul Sharples
Local Labour Prospective Candidate for Douglas Ward May 7th, 2026

Born in Wigan, I have lived and grown up in this town I have called home all my life.

Full statement

In my early years I spent them around the centre of Wigan, then went to St John Fisher Catholic High School, afterwards moving on to Wigan and Leigh College to get my Level 3 NVQ in Mechanical Engineering Maintenance.

I have been working with your local Labour councillors in Douglas Ward, delivering on getting potholes repaired, going to surgeries, and assisting with casework across the ward.

I have seen the magnificent work our Labour council has done — from the FAB Futures scheme providing funding to apprentices across this borough, to support young people to get local jobs right here in Wigan. The Here for You campaign supports pensioners and other residents to get the money they deserve, and thanks to this support an extra £11 million is in the hands of people across Wigan.

The latest news on local road maintenance is that in Wigan Borough we are one of the top councils in the country with a green rating but we won’t stop there delivering better roads.

This is why I am asking for your support today. I am standing to support our residents, to support our apprentices, to support our pensioners, and to support all of you in Douglas Ward.

The future belong to all of us and I cannot wait to meet all of you when I am canvassing and door knocking and delivering for you all in Douglas ward.
