Statement to voters

DR THANGAVELU SENTHIL KUMAR - “The Strongest Voice to Deliver Real Change”
Independent Candidate for Woodberry Down Ward Councilor Election
on 7 May 2026: 7am to 10pm

Who Am I?
I am a frontline NHS doctor with lived experience of serving the communities in the UK for the past 25 years.

Full statement

I have worked across the UK in various hospitals often at the deepest end, helping people during difficult and challenging times in their lives.

I believe politics should be about service, honesty, and accountability —. I chose to stand as an Independent who is directly accountable, easily accessible and answers to Woodberry Down residents — not to party bosses, ego, hierarchy or propaganda.

Independent does NOT mean powerless. Independent means accountable directly to YOU. If elected I will have the freedom to speak honestly without permission from any party higher-ups, fearlessly challenge injustice, be fully committed to be your voice when you need someone to stand up and speak for you and focus entirely for your needs.

Why I Am Contesting This Election?
I have experienced months of homelessness right here in this Woodberry down ward. I have felt invisible, overlooked, and systemically and systematically let down by the very systems that were supposed to help. I know what that feels like. And I never want you to feel it alone. Now I want to serve Woodberry Down as your councillor — not as a party member following orders, but as your neighbour, your advocate, and your voice.

I believe our Woodberry Down community deserves better access, stronger representation, and practical solutions rather than empty promises repeated over decades. “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is insanity.” – Albert Einstein. Remember if you have the same people doing the same things, you should expect the same results. It is now time for that long elusive CHANGE.

I previously served within a political party, driven by a sincere desire to help people and improve our community. However, I experienced repeated barriers, discrimination, and restrictions that prevented me from serving residents in the way I believed was right. Too often, my genuine hard work and compassion were overlooked while party politics took priority over people.

Your Vote will Deliver that Change:
I know our streets, relate our struggles and our potential.
I have never shied away from doing what is right for someone – I guarantee that is not going to change.

What Will I Deliver for Woodberry Down?
Commit to work full-time (not just as a side-project) for CLEANER, GREENER, SAFER & STRONGER Woodberry Down.

  1. Housing & Affordability: Engage as a top priority with tenants' and residents' associations to deliver more affordable housing for everyone. Ensure everyone has a roof over their head and eradicate homelessness.

  2. Safety: Feeling safe is a right, not a luxury. I will work with police and youth services on practical, workable plans to eradicate crime — as has been achieved elsewhere — so every Woodberry resident can walk home safely, day or night.

  3. Clean & Green Environment: Organise neighbourhood clean-up days, litter picks, and graffiti removal with rewards and incentives for the best areas. Plan more rubbish bins, more frequent rubbish collection, more safer cycle lanes, and additional car parking.

  4. Resident Voice & Consultation: Run monthly door-to-door surveys to identify the top three local issues, directing resources and shaping policy. Hold an annual ward-level "wish list" consultation timed to Hackney's budget cycle, empowering residents to directly influence over the spending.

  5. Community Panels & Co-Design: Convene a citizens' panel of 20–30 randomly selected residents to deliberate on key local issues, reporting findings directly to the full council. Run seasonal community design days where residents co-design parks, playgrounds, or high streets alongside the council's planning team.

  6. Local Business & Essential Services: Support local business growth to increase competition, lower prices, and create jobs. Lobby to cut unnecessary bureaucracy and secure more essential services — including GP and dental surgeries — for Woodberry Down.

  7. Youth & Civic Engagement: Partner with local schools and youth clubs for mock elections, debates, and workshops to build civic trust and develop responsible future generations. Recruit community guardians to drive evidence-based initiatives improving the health, safety, and development of young people while reducing socioeconomic inequalities.

  8. Community Spirit & Welfare: Promote door-to-door canvassing to introduce councillors to residents, listen to concerns, and ensure nobody feels isolated — not just at Christmas, but throughout the year.

  9. Standing Against Injustice: I have personally experienced prejudice, false allegations / accusations, and unjust systems. I will always stand against injustice — including when the system itself is failing you.

  10. These are not just my rhetorical slogans; these are my personal commitments to Woodberry Down. If you elect me, my councillor role will not be a side project. I will be 100% committed and accessible for Woodberry Down – attending, listening and delivering every single day.

Give me that chance — I will never let you down.
