Steve has lived in the Heathfield and Mayfield area for over 30 years and is deeply committed to the local community. He became involved through the parent–teacher committee at Cross in Hand School, later serving as a school governor. He then served for seven years on Heathfield & Waldron Parish Council. He continues to support the area by volunteering to help maintain a local woodland that was saved from development
