Statement to voters
West Molesey is joining the new East Surrey Council and the election on Thursday 7th May is to elect your two councillors for the next five years.
Full statement
I am Steve Bax and have been a Molesey councillor since 2014, and serving the community for even longer. I am the current Deputy Cabinet Member Highways at Surrey County Council and the Mayor of Elmbridge for 2025-26.
I have earned a reputation for being a highly visible and active councillor who listens to residents and gets things done for Molesey. I always put community needs before party politics, as a good councillor should.
I am proud to have secured funding for local groups and schools, new crossings outside St Lawrence School and St Albans, a new subsidised bus to Esher High School, grants for restoration work at Esher High and Cranmere Primary. I have funded throwlines at the riverside and a patrol boat and campaigned for free swimming at our leisure centres for teenagers in the summers holidays following tragic incidents on our river.
I have secured £3m for the replacement of Mole Bridge and resurfaced local roads like Hurst Road and a mile of Walton Road. Resurfacing is the only sure way to stop potholes and I will be pushing for more roads funding for Molesey from the new council.
I will shortly be delivering a manifesto to every house detailing more of my plans and setting out a longer list of achievements. Everyone makes claims at election time but track record is the best indicator of what to expect.
West Molesey will only have two councillors at this new East Surrey Council and if they are not reliable or engaged, our area could lose out on its fair share of resources and go backwards. So this is an election about individuals - who is best for Molesey. It's not about parties or national politics.
Feel free to email me any questions and follow my public posts on Facebook. I hope you will vote with Molesey in mind on 7th May and vote for Cllr Steve Bax and my excellent running mate Sunny Cadman.PS - I moved to Molesey in 2005 and lived on the Bishop Fox estate for 10 years with my wife, whose family are 4 generations Molesey. We currently live on the edge of Walton just over the reservoirs. My political roots are in Molesey and will remain so. By profession, I am a former reporter / editor for local newspapers, now freelancing. I believe very strongly in keeping residents informed and in representing local views.
