Statement to voters

Andrew’s involvement with Glasgow North stretches back to 2000 when he moved here to study Economics and Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. Immediately after his final exams, Andrew was elected as the youngest Liberal Democrat councillor in Scotland. He represented Kilwinning in North Ayrshire, serving as leader of the North Ayrshire Lib Dem Council group and as one of the Council’s representatives on the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities.

Andrew currently lives in North Kelvinside in the heart of the constituency. In his view, the West End of Glasgow is an incredibly exciting place to live and work. The area’s unique mix of creative, forward-looking people make campaigning locally a joyful experience.

The values of internationalism, tolerance and personal freedom that lie at the heart of the Liberal Democrats are what motivated Andrew to join the party as a student. He remains committed to the ideal of a peaceful, integrated Europe and is fully engaged in the fight to stop Brexit. For much the same reasons, he is equally committed to opposing Scottish independence.

Andrew believes that we should set aside narrow nationalism and refocus on the issues that affect our quality of life. Glasgow has some of the worst air quality readings of any city in the UK. Serious efforts need to be made locally to get traffic off our roads and at a UK and EU level to encourage green investment. Homelessness is a shameful feature of our city’s streets. As well as central government funding more affordable housing, there is a need for the Council to rethink its homelessness services. More broadly, we must address the decline in the quality of Scotland’s public services caused by the SNP’s neglect.
