Statement to voters

I have been a member of the Labour Party since the 1970s and was Treasurer to the Elmet Branch before moving to Ulleskelf 23 years ago. I am currently an Officer (Membership Secretary) in Selby & Ainsty CLP.

I am a ward volunteer in the ‘Friends of Selby Memorial Hospital’ and with the help of my wife, collect and deliver food and basic items from local churches and school to the Selby Foodbank and Castleford Street Kitchen.

Working as a Parish Councillor in Ulleskelf has made me keenly aware of the needs of our community such as affordable housing, reliable public transport and clean, healthy streets and open spaces. These local issues are made worse by austere national policies. The public services we do have are deteriorating – fewer Police are on our streets and highways and the Emergency Services are overstretched.

I am a family man, with two grown-up children and seven grandchildren. My 37 years as a high school teacher in Leeds have made me acutely conscious of the swingeing cuts to our Education provision, causing stress to overworked staff and worse still, deep cuts into vital Support Services for the pupils and students. This inevitably stores up all manner of social problems for the future and we are seeing these emerge more and more.

If elected, I will represent all of the people in the Appleton Roebuck and Church Fenton Wards to the very best of my ability.
