Statement to voters
I moved to Liphook in 1989 when I became estates manager of Bohunt Manor which was the home of my aunt, Lady Holman. Long before my Aunt died, she realised that Bohunt Manor might not be kept for the enjoyment of all residents of Liphook as she wished. I promised to do all I could to fulfil her wishes.
In April 2011 Bohunt Manor was included in the new South Downs National Park. I am opposed to massive housing developments in all parts of the National Park. I would like to see the area at the foot of Station Road left as an open vista to the hills beyond.
The medical centre proposed by the current owners was never going to happen because there is no finance for it. Instead any building constructed should be a Visitor Centre and a place where bicycles can be hired to explore the area. The promised football pitch could never have flood lights as required by the FA as this would contravene the National Park’s Dark Night Skies policy.
Our present Conservative councillors have continually promoted large-scale housing in the National Park or even to have the park boundary shifted. If they succeeded it would increase the risk of urban sprawl elsewhere in Liphook and we would lose our bit of the National Park for ever.
I have been a Liphook Parish Councillor since 2012 and Chair of its Recreation Committee since last year. I have tried to provide recreational opportunities for the young people of Liphook, as well as support for the Football Club.
I believe that new community facilities can be provided for Bramshott and Liphook by developer contributions from other housing developments already under construction or planned elsewhere.
