Statement to voters

I have lived and worked in the area most of my life I know the area, the people and the issues incredibly well.

    Full statement

My career has been spent serving and protecting the public, whilst working for Local Authorities, Police, Fire and Rescue Service and leading partnerships to tackle crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour across the region.

As a Labour Councillor and Cabinet Member I have held the Safer Communities portfolio where I worked closely with the late Ron Hogg, Durham’s Police, Crime and Victims Commissioner and as Chair of the Police and Crime Panel I held him to account by scrutinising his policies, performance and proposed council tax precept.

This significant and varied operational experience is underpinned by strong academic credentials. I have a BA Hons in Management and Administration, MSc in Security and Crime Risk Management and an MBA from Durham University Business School.

I have always worked hard to do the right thing for local people as a Mayor, Councillor and Cabinet Member and I have fought for the things that are important to residents and businesses and stood up for the those who need it most.

People deserve to feel safe in their own communities and they know best where the problems are and how they should be tackled. Residents are particularly concerned about crime they see on their doorstep or that target them in their own homes.

As Police and Crime Commissioner I will utilise all my skills, experience and expertise to tackle issues such as anti-social behaviour, violent crime, substance misuse, dangerous driving and fraud to make the communities of County Durham and Darlington safer, stronger and more resilient.

I will fight to ensure that the Government stick to its promises of providing more police resources and that Durham Police gets its fair share of funding.

You can depend on me to place the public at the heart of everything I do and I will do all in my power to ensure the communities of Durham and Darlington get the policing service they want and deserve.
