Statement to voters

Your Green party candidate for Erewash is 41-year-old local schoolteacher, Brent Poland who lives in Erewash with his wife and two young children. Originally from Northern Ireland, Brent made Erewash his home 19 years ago and is passionate about improving the area while also preserving the history and unique local culture.

He says:
Erewash has been my home for nearly two decades, I have lived here for 19 years and I’ve worked here as a teacher for 16 of those years. Perhaps, most importantly to me, I am raising my family here: my children go to school here; we shop here; we use the parks and local amenities; we experience the same issues as every other Erewash resident; and I am completely invested in the long-term future of the whole of the borough.

Having always had an interest in politics, I have been an active member of the Green Party since 2014 when I was made aware of local issues such as fracking and HS2. I felt the current political establishment was failing us. In 2015 and 2017, I helped support our previous candidate but now is the right time for me to step up and stand for the Green seat at the Erewash Council Table.

As candidate for the Green Party, I am looking forward to holding the current government party to account and to address the opposition parties on matters which have affected our borough in recent years. I think you will agree that Erewash requires systematic change politically, economically and environmentally to improve quality of life for each, and every, Erewash resident.

Our starting local manifesto is simple –
• To properly fund ALL local front-line services

We will reverse the austerity of the last 10 years and not just patch up what is broken by ensuring all have access to vital social services. This includes quality social care, protection of our hospital and all of the emergency services. Not only reverse cuts to Ilkeston hospital but expand the number of beds and reinstate the drop in centre.

• Stop and not move HS2

Clear position on HS2 and not playing party politics by putting the residents of Erewash first and not vested interests. End the blight on our community and ensure that all those responsible for HS2 are held to account.

• A stronger local economy, with the right job in the right place for the right person
Regeneration of both Ilkeston and Long Eaton High streets, by working with and supporting local businesses to offer sustainable and meaningful employment with living wages and a work life balance which maximises the potential of the area and not a race to the bottom.

We firmly believe we are stronger in Europe and have not changed our stance on remain but would support a people’s vote on Brexit.

• Future proof Erewash for the climate change crisis

The clock is ticking on environmental policy reform; we will make sure that residents of Erewash have a voice in protecting our community, our local environment and way of life. We will take radical steps to help prevent and protect our residents against flooding, fracking, large scale building projects and HS2 while conserving and regenerating our precious and beautiful greenbelt.

The number of Green votes in Erewash has been steadily increasing over the past 5 years and we believe that if people ignore the ‘a vote for anything other than Labour is a vote for Conservative’ rhetoric and vote with their conscience according to party policies and manifestos this number will continue to increase.

Brent and the Erewash Green party will be hosting various meet and greet sessions open to the general public between now and the election for local residents to inform us of what local issues are important to them and to allow people to ask questions on Green Party policies.

If you believe in our Green vision for Erewash and “ Putting Erewash first” then vote for Brent.

Thank you
