Statement to voters
Ben Fletcher, 36, lives in Southfields with his partner Lauren. He works for the Financial Times as a Lead Developer on the FT.com website. Originally from Yorkshire, Ben graduated from the University of York in 2004 with a first class degree in Computer Science. He was then headhunted by IBM, where he became a Master Inventor with over 20 patents to his name. He later set up his own IT consultancy, spent some time at a tech start-up, then joined the FT in 2015, where he quickly rose through the ranks.
Ben was born profoundly deaf and partially sighted. His first language is British Sign Language (BSL). Winner of the Disabled Person of the Year award in 2008, he has never let his disability get in the way of his achievements - quite the opposite! The first deafblind person ever to stand for Parliament in the UK, Ben is an experienced political activist and campaigner for equality, human and animal rights, protection of the environment and a fairer and more democratic political system.
