Statement to voters

Haverhill is often seen as the poor relation of Suffolk.

Full statement

Its position on the periphery of Suffolk means that it is often overlooked for the major infrastructure schemes seen elsewhere in the county. Despite being a rapidly expanding town investment that would ensure that public services keep pace with its growth has been conspicuous by its absence. Investment in local authorities by this Conservative government has halved since it came to power on 2010. Children's centres, health visitors and school transport, and this list is not exhaustive, have all been cut. The incompetence and complacency has seen millions wasted on infrastructure projects that will never see the light of day.
Haverhill cannot exist in isolation, and your LOCAL LABOUR PARTY CANDIDATES will work with other colleagues across the county to ensure that the town is afforded its fair share of funding and services to meet the challenges of the future, and address historical wrongs. We will work for a Suffolk that tackles health inequalities, mends our shabby highways, reconnects our transport system and build a greener county, with Haverhill at the heart of everything we do.

About David Smith
David is currently a ward councillor for Haverhill South on both West Suffolk and Haverhill Town councils. He moved to Haverhill with his family almost twenty years ago, and was immediately struck by the warm and friendly welcome they received.
He worked for many years in the town's Crown Post Office, before being elected to represent post office workers as an Area Representative of the Communication Workers Union covering much of East Anglia, the northern Home Counties and North London.
Since leaving the Post Office he has worked in the town's Sainsbury's store as a Travel Money Advisor.
David has always emersed himself in local projects, and was a founder member of Haverhill South People's Forum, a residents group set up to address health inequalities in the area through improvements to local area an amenities. He served as Chair of the forum from it's inception until he stood down on being elected to the councils.
Projects by the forum include the Puddlebrook Pump Track and the Community Allotment site in Jubilee Park.
David also chairs the St Felix Parochial Parish Council, and was a member of the fundraising team that helped bring about the building of the impressive new church.
