Statement to voters
I have lived in Surrey Heath for 39 years during which time I have seen major changes as the area has become more heavily populated and congested. Housing is an issue but cannot continue exponentially without due consideration to infrastructure and services. Public transport is being cut and the road system is literally cracking under the strain. Alongside this, pollution and the erosion of natural habitats threaten the quality of life of residents and wildlife.
My community work has included: volunteer therapist in hospitals/hospices, Adult Education tutor for supported learning adults, learning assistant in a secondary school, Carer Support Worker, Advocate for Adults with Complex needs.
I produced and presented a 3 hour radio programme for a local radio station for 2 years.
I am Chair of a Service User and Carer Advisory group at Surrey University which involves organising groups of people in a number of events.
I am deeply concerned about the quality of our schools and the stress that teachers are under. With childhood mental health a growing issue more strain is being put upon schools to tackle this in an already overburdened timetable. Mental Health services are failing people with long waiting lists. Whilst we have an excellent hospital (Frimley Park) in our area we need to protect this from further NHS cuts. It is essential to ensure that Sustainability and Transformation Plans deliver on services and do enable integration between services in an effective manner not just focusing on cost cutting alone.
The future is uncertain and we need a sea change in society’s fundamental belief that only those in employment are contributing and of value to society. Taking care of those who are vulnerable and in need is an integral to being human. I am passionate about building a more just and equitable society. I always stand up for my beliefs and cannot sit idly by as the social fabric of our country is being systematically destroyed. I want to be part of a society in which cooperation not conflict is the accepted norm. That is why I am standing for the Green Party.
