Statement to voters
Max Wilkinson is running to be the Liberal Democrat MP for Cheltenham. Like many local residents, Max fell in love with Cheltenham the moment he moved to the town from where he grew up in Weston-super-Mare. He has lived here for a decade – first in the Park area and now in the town centre with his partner Emma, who works as a school teacher.
After leaving University, Max worked as a journalist – writing for the same newspaper he delivered on his childhood paper round– and as a sports reporter. But reporting on the issues affecting the people of Gloucestershire – from the effects of air pollution outside schools to families in poor quality housing - wasn’t changing things quickly enough.
Max began campaigning with the Liberal Democrats to demand better for Cheltenham and for Britain. His record of action speaks for itself. He has successfully led teams of campaigners to:
Secure £100million for housing for young people and families in Cheltenham
Establish a roadmap to a carbon neutral town by 2030
Declare Cheltenham a Remain town
Name Cheltenham one of the UK’s cities of sanctuary for vulnerable refugees
He believes passionately that bringing people together is key to making a difference, whether that’s people in different areas of town, people of different faiths or simply the formation of local community groups.
If elected to parliament, Max would be an energetic, fresh voice for Cheltenham’s values – bringing his experience both in business and as a local Councillor. Often seen cycling through town on his bright orange bike and chatting to residents, he will be an approachable, listening MP. Whether supporting local campaigns to protect our environment, or standing up to Boris Johnson’s damaging hard Brexit plans, Max will be a powerful champion for Cheltenham. Max will fight for a brighter future for every person, every community and our planet as part of Jo Swinson’s team.
