Candidate pledges

Hope Not Hate, a London-based charity, canvassed local residents and community organisations to establish the following questions to the candidates in this ward.

Should 16 years olds have the right to vote? Please elaborate on your answer.

It is Labour Party policy that 16 year-olds should have the right to vote. It is important all politicians remember that decisions made today will affect young people in the future so they should have a say in those decisions.

Will you ballot residents on the final regeneration proposal and guarantee that all residents who wish will be given the chance to return to Cambridge Road Estate? If so, when?

Labour wants all residents to be ballotted on the final proposal, including lease-holders and free-holders. Labour Councillors suceeded in getting the Council to agree a ballot, by putting a motion to Council on the 17th April. This included seeking 50% of the regenerated properties being social or Council housing, a right to return and rents set at the Government agreed levels. As far as we understand the Estate will be done in six phases and we will argue that at each phase residents should be able to return.

What is your strategy to reduce anti-social behaviour and gang crime in the area?

We are not aware that gang crime is prevalent in Norbiton, but anti-social behaviour is a problem in some areas. The Tory Council cut youth services as well as closed Searchlight youth club, we would seek to re-establish youth services in the areas they are needed and other services like support for access to work for young people. Drugs are a problem in some areas and we would work with the voluntary organisations who can best advise on drug use prevention and support for those who are dependent on drugs and alcohol.
