Statement to voters
Steve Toone I am a 48 year old disabled father to two young men aged 16 and 19, husband too Vanessa and a committed christian.
In addition to all that I am a Conservative party member of 10 plus years, and I’ve only ever voted for the Conservatives since turning 18. As a child I followed my parents around the length and breadth of the UK and the former colonies. My Father served for 22 years in the RAF and was instrumental in me learning self reliance and self discipline. As such, Defence is something that I am keen to remain connected too. I also take an interest in local policing. I believe a return to broken windows policing is the answer too many of societies problems, along side encouraging good parenting practice, we should be able tackle most aspects of youth crime and prevent professional criminals from being made by over exposure to the criminal justice system. Living in different areas of the UK and other countries has shown me tolerance, respect to others and a willingness to serve in public office. Unfortunately my health stopped me following in my Fathers footsteps but politics has opened a new door for me to serve others. As a wheelchair user I have learnt to problem solve on the fly and this helps in my work life as well. I have worked in many different areas throughout my working career, ranging from working in pubs and restaurants to working in call centre’s. My last role was working in loss adjustment within an extended warranty provider for the UK. I also sit as Chair on a local brass band committee and have experience of working within both the charity commission and companies house regulations. As a disabled person I have experience of claiming and navigating both disability and local authority benefits and I enjoy helping people to get the relevant benefits they’re entitled too. As a Conservative I believe in the dignity of work and encourage everyone able, to get off benefits as soon as possible, as it is well documented to improve both physical and mental health. As a Councillor I will hold the Executive and the Police and Crime Commissioner to account and ensure that all voices from my ward are heard in the appropriate manner, whilst seeking to foment good working connections from other parties.
