Statement to voters
HOUSING: Why does the Labour mayor
give developers permission to build
unaffordable flats on council land when
there are 600 Lewisham families in
temporary housing who need a council
house to rent?
CRIME: Lewisham has a high rate
of school exclusion and this leads to
youngsters getting drawn into crime,
drugs, gangs. Parents are now having to
go back to work when their children start
school which has led to a generation of
SCHOOLS: too many children are
travelling long distances to their
secondary schools because of the
failures of Lewisham council to provide
enough school places. Education
should not be a money making business
by chains of academies. Teachers
should be given the resources to teach
life skills without being pressurised by
league tables of exam results. New
schools built under Labour’s private
finance initiative (PFI) schemes are
bankrupting the council, but are good
news for bankers!
SCRAP ALL PFI CONTRACTS!
JOBS: We need to stop the council
contracting out work to inefficient firms
which employ people on low wages.
Instead the council should employ
local people directly and have
apprenticeships for school leavers.
Keep the money in the local economy.
Why did the last mayor close down the
Connexions office which helped school
leavers find training courses?
CLIMATE CHANGE: The pollution
levels in this borough are dangerous
to our health and I support Rosamund
Adoo-Kissi-Debrah’s campaign for
clean air following the tragic death of
her daughter. The council passed a
“Climate Emergency” motion on the
same day as they bulldozed the Tidemill
Wildlife Garden in Deptford – how can
we trust Labour with our future?
