Statement to voters
I love living in Evelyn Ward - I've lived on Grove Street for five years, having lived a one-minute walk away, just the other side of Plough Way, for the previous eight. I love the diversity that enriches the area, as well as the powerful community spirit. I love Deptford Market, fantastic local parks, and the strong sense of location and heritage.
A little about me: I started my career in youth work, and have since spent the last 30 years working for charity. I've been the CEO of three charities - I'm currently running a national organisation which supports Deaf people - and am currently Chair of a charitable trust which provides medical assistance to local people.
I’m a member of the Green Liberal Democrats (an official grouping within the Party), and am delighted to be an approved Green Lib Dem candidate. This reflects my deep and growing horror at climate change and the degradation of our environment. Green-minded voters locally have three votes but only one Green Party candidate. I want them to know I share their concerns, and hope they can consider me an ally they can support.
Why have I decided to stand as a Lib Dem in 2018? Mainly because I think Labour have had it their own way for too long. Complacency and arrogance have clearly set in. Labour has 53 out of 54 Councillors in the area, so they are never open to challenge in the Council Chamber. They also have the Mayor! That just isn't healthy. Labour would govern better if they had a strong opposition. I've personally spoken with high-ranking local Labour people who agree. Even Evelyn Labour's own campaign leaflet says "There seems to be a general feeling in the area that Labour has taken local people for granted”.
One of the many consequences of Lewisham Labour's contempt for local democracy has been the whole CPO debacle at Millwall's ground, where local opinion has been totally ignored. Lewisham Lib Dems are clear that there should be no CPO at the Den, and I strongly support that position. On a similar note, I was also personally witness to Evelyn councillors’ arrogant indifference when confronted with the concerns of local parents in relation to the 'austerity' build of Sir Francis Drake School.
Whichever way you look at it - from our failing secondary schools, to the lack of effective action against local air pollution, to the lack of adequate social housing, and the lack of transparency around deals with property developers - Lewisham can do better. If elected, I will focus on representing residents' interests at Council level, and creating positive change in a way that reflects local people's concerns and priorities.
