Statement to voters
I have lived in Hastings since I was 10 years old, and was brought up and educated here. Most of my working life as a solicitor was spent here.
This is a relaxed, easy-going town where everyone can feel accepted. Whatever you are into, there is a place for you here. However, times are changing and pressures are being brought to bear that might change the special nature of our town if we are not alert and ready to defend the things we value.
Chain-store enterprises descend on the town like vultures, siphoning their profits out of the town to benefit remote financial empires, while taking the livelihoods away from small, local family businesses. Commercial interests threaten to build a playground for rich out-of-towners to buy second-homes on The Stade in the Old Town when we desperately need housing that young people can afford so that they can stay in their home town. Meanwhile dubious deals enable contractors and financiers to cover green spaces with office buildings doomed to stand empty, in a mockery of their empty promises of bringing jobs here.
