Statement to voters
"Karen will be a candidate in Northgate / West Green in May 2019.
After having gained a degree as a mature student, Karen had a successful career as a primary school teacher. She taught in Bewbush, Crawley, for ten years, and then as an assistant headteacher in Worthing. Before retiring, she worked as a special needs and child protection consultant in Hackney, London. Before gaining qualifications, and while her children were young, Karen did several different kinds of low-paid jobs. She knows what it is like to worry about making ends meet, and how important it can be that the state provides a safety net for those experiencing hard times.
Karen knows how hard it can be for children from poor and/or difficult backgrounds to get on in life, and although recent Government figures have proved this, it is really no surprise. Education can make all the difference, but poverty is the real enemy. It puts strain on relationships, and even causes families to break up. If you go to the best school in the world, it is hard to learn if you haven’t had enough to eat, or you are worried about what is happening at home. Karen has seen how much worse things have become, and understands that desperate times call for brave measures to make things better.
Over the past four years, Karen has worked as a member of the Labour council to try to protect Crawley people from the worst consequences of eight years of harsh Tory measures."
