Hope Not Hate, a London-based charity, canvassed local residents and community organisations to establish the following questions to the candidates in this ward.
Will you ballot residents on the final regeneration proposal and guarantee that all residents who wish will be given the chance to return to Cambridge Road Estate? If so, when?
"I am fully committed to a ballot on the final regeneration proposal, and feel strongly that all residents must be given the right to return to the Cambridge Road Estate. However, we must work to ensure residents fully understand the impact of their choice in any ballot, and also ensure that all options are listed. A ballot should take place when we know the final regeneration proposal."
What is your strategy to reduce anti-social behaviour and gang crime in the area?
"It was a great shame when the Searchlight Community Centre was closed, with the Council actually encouraging children to meet social workers 'on the street' (their term!). I would like to see more youth centres, such as reopening the ones the Conservatives closed down, and, further, we must reverse the cuts to funding in police in Kingston town centre."
Should 16 years olds have the right to vote? Please elaborate your answer.
"My personal view is that the voting age should remain at 18, at the current time. With media playing such a strong role in elections, I feel that many 16 year olds are too impressionable and would not be casting their vote based on their own research and views, but rather based on the spin presented to them via the media. Despite this, I also feel strongly we need more education of politics for young people in schools, which would go a way to resolving this."
