Statement to voters
"Rachel has lived in Southend for some years and works as a journalist. As well as being active in local political campaigns she has helped organise community arts events such as the Village Green festival and Dangerous Poetry and taken part in several Southend Pride events.
Rachel says, “I have a good working knowledge of local government gained through my involvement in local politics as well as through my work as an editor on the Local Government Chronicle and know well the challenges many councils, including Southend’s, are facing. I am also very used to listening to and acting on people’s concerns not only as a political campaigner and in my work as a journalist, but also as a union organiser where I have secured many positive outcomes for members.”
“I commute to London every working day and share the same burden of high fares and sometimes poor service as many local residents. My concerns over crime, particularly knife crime, and anti-social behaviour match those of the many local people I have spoken to who fear being out late at night. There is no quick fix for those problems but my Labour Councillor colleagues have put forward constructive ideas that the Council’s Conservative administration has been very slow to adopt. It seems to me that many residents of Belfairs ward think that they haven’t been properly represented by a Councillor who actually cares about local issues and services here. They are ready for a change and, if elected, I will work hard to represent and protect their interests.”"
