Statement to voters
"Barbara was born in York and attended Haxby Road Primary School and Mill Mount Grammar School. She worked for York City Planning Department before attending University in her 20s; the first member of her family to go into higher education. She then trained to teach and spent many years working in further education colleges in Yorkshire teaching young people and adults who needed a second chance at education and training. Later she did a Master’s Degree in Computer Science and worked for a company producing software for colleges and universities. She returned to York around the turn of the millennium when her mother became in need of care.
Barbara has been a member of the Labour Party since the late 1970s after becoming aware of the need for good public services when working in local government. She has been involved in elections and other campaigns ever since as well as having various branch and constituency officer roles and being a member of the Regional Board. She has been an elected member in two local authorities and a parish council as well as a Parliamentary candidate. She was the Lord Mayor of York in 2017/18. In her spare time, apart from Labour Party politics, she volunteers for animal rescue charities and theatre groups.
“We need to elect Labour members in Fishergate Ward in order to ensure that we have a Labour run council in York for the next four years and beyond. This is essential if we are combat the increasing social and economic problems in our city and ensure a fairer deal for all our citizens. I want to work for the residents of Fishergate in partnership with local voluntary groups, agencies and businesses in order to ensure we have a sustainable and thriving community for the future.”
