Full statement
He's worked most of his life in retail and is now an ethical entrepreneur, business writer and retail analyst. He was elected to Cherwell District Council in 2019 as their first ever Green Party councillor and to Oxfordshire County Council in 2021. He leads the Green groups on both councils. He sits on the Executive at Cherwell District Council and also sits on three parish councils: Kidlington, Gosford and Water Eaton, and Yarnton.
Ian has campaigned on local flooding protection, road conditions, cycling infrastructure and health service provision. He has been a fierce campaigner against the District Council's plans to build on green belt in and around Kidlington, Begbroke and Yarnton, and since being elected has held the council and landowners to account on these plans numerous times. He also campaigns on affordable housing provision and animal protection issues.
He has also campaigned to reinstate the NHS to full public ownership with full funding and resourcing to ensure NHS dental services and GPs remain accessible for all that need them. He also wants to see a decent social car system that covers everyone no matter what their means providing the dignity of choice for care and accommodation.
As a local councillor he's fought for greater availability of affordable housing in Kidlington and Bicester and for better provision of vital infrastructure to support existing housing developments. He's a strong advocate for bringing public utilities back into public control, especially water, energy and public transport.
He of course has campaigned for many years on climate change, biodiversity and nature recovery.
On local issues in the constituency he has been a vocal sceptic of the plans to build a football stadium in Kidlington without full support and proper consultation with local residents. Ian appreciates that the majority of residents are opposed to these plans and he wants to make sure their voices are heard.
He is also calling for a full rethink on the Botley West Solar Farm project that would see 3500 acres of local green belt covered in glass and steel. Ian supports renewable energy generation but does not feel that the scale and location of this project is acceptable or appropriate.
