Statement to voters

I’m standing in the by-election on 22 February to be your first Green councillor on the Marsh, joining a successful, hardworking team running the district council.

Full statement

As someone who has lived on the Marsh for nearly 40 years, running a successful local business and an active member of the local community, I believe I'm the right person to represent you and the needs of this unique place.

Before I moved here and raised my own family on the Marsh, my family brought me to Romney Marsh for holidays. However, the Marsh faces challenges. Running a company employing local people, I understand how difficult it can be for local businesses and their staff, especially at the moment.

Southern Water has not done enough to prevent sewage making the sea unsafe to swim in at St Mary’s Bay, threatening local tourism, or to stop rainwater flooding homes in Dymchurch, and I will join your Green council in demanding the improvements we all deserve. The Marsh mustn't be neglected, including when it comes to local health and leisure facilities.

Now that the hated Princes Parade development in Hythe has been cancelled, avoiding more millions being wasted, I want to see a new leisure centre at Martello Lakes, which will be much easier to get to for families on the Marsh.

In my spare time, I am actively involved with the maintenance and preservation of the historic Marsh churches and support as patron JAM on the Marsh - two very different projects that help to make the Marsh so special.

Nowhere in our district are we closer to nature or more at risk if we do not protect it. This is a subject close to my heart: I designed and built my first heat pump at 18 years old, designed my own experimental solar water heating system for my bungalow and now my company produces critical equipment for the water and renewable energy industries.

But the Green Party is about much more. If elected, I will join a hardworking team that has already brought change to Folkestone & Hythe District Council. The council now listens to residents, works in their best interests and behaves responsibly. The Green Party moved quickly to fix the finances after the Conservatives left behind a £4.5 million deficit. In nine short months our hardworking councillors have demonstrated why voters were right to trust them and I hope you will give me your trust.

The Marsh needs a stronger voice on the council. If elected, I will be that voice, ready and able to speak my mind for you and the place that’s so precious to all of us.

Best Wishes Malcolm

PS. Please make a note to vote GREEN on 22 February. A very small number of votes will decide the result and yours will definitely make a difference.

Promoted by Malcolm Watkinson on behalf of himself and Shepway Green Party. Both c/o White Lodge, Church Road, New Romney, TN28 8EX.
