Statement to voters
I have been out canvassing and delivering leaflets in the ward and apologise if I have not been able to personally meet you. I would like to be given the chance to represent you, putting your views and concerns in West Shoebury to the Council.
I am an active member of the Save Southend NHS group and have been fighting for more than two years to, first, stop the downgrading of the A&E and now to stop the removal of vital stroke and cancer services from OUR hospital. I am totally convinced that the Conservatives are intent on removing the stroke and cancer units from Southend Hospital. We should be improving our facilities, not downgrading them, and by continually voting Conservative we are in danger of losing our specialist services. Is that really what you want?
I am also working to improve proposed Transport Plans for our hospital and minibus services for Special Educational Needs schoolchildren as well as adults with disabilities. Many of you will know me, as I have been driving SEN children to local schools for some 10 years now, and I understand how much of a challenge it can be to get the Council to listen when YOU just want a decent transport system in place for home to school children or a home to day centre service.
Make Housing affordable again - I am completely against the new development deal agreed for Queensway between the Conservatives and Labour. We should be making housing affordable for all - but the main parties seem to be intent on removing all social housing from the town centre. Unless this is stopped, Labour and the Conservatives will eradicate all social housing and social rents from our local area. If you keep voting Conservative and Labour at some stage you will end up paying affordable rent which is on average £350.00 per month more than social rents. You have a choice. Therefore vote Independent to stop this from happening.
My priorities are:
Making Southend safe again. I am totally convinced and confident that working with my Independent colleagues we can deliver improved neighbourhood policing and get more police officers back on the streets. Many of my friends and some of my neighbours are serving officers in areas such as Child Protection. I know how hard they are finding it, with more and more funding cuts being imposed on them. I’ll be lobbying for more money for Southend’s police.
Getting Southend working again. Under the Conservatives unemployment has increased by 55%. Independents will deliver better solutions to help drive the local economy and improve employment opportunities.
Introducing a parking fee strategy that will make car parking throughout the whole town, including the High Street, more affordable for local people, which in turn will help local businesses.
Improving street lighting where areas have become darker due to new LED lights.
Funding for Adult Social Care to ring fence all funding for adult social care, unlike the Conservatives who removed £1.5 million from the budget. I will drive forward improvements and provide additional new facilities for dementia and adult social care.
Creating a decent street scene. Independents will strive to improve and invest in roads, pavements, parks, and open spaces such as beaches.
We Independents have forced the Conservatives to build a new health centre for Shoeburyness. This would not have happened if Independents weren’t fighting for YOU and YOUR services.
