Statement to voters

"First elected to the Council in 2015, Leigh was elected to Deputy Leader of Melton Borough Council in May 2016. Leigh has an excellent working relationship with the Leader, Joe Orson, and the rest of the Conservative team on the Council.

Leigh is extremely proud to serve the residents of the Somerby Ward where he lives, which comprise the villages of Somerby, Twyford, Thorpe Satchville, John O’Gaunt, Burrough on the Hill, Pickwell, Leesthorpe, Knossington and Cold Overton.

With the key priority for secure the funding for the Melton Bypass Leigh has taken a leading role for making the case working with Leicestershire County Council and Sir Alan Duncan MP. With the bid now gone into the Department for Transport he awaits the outcome - which is expected to be in the summer 2018.

On the Council, Leigh is Chairman of the Sports Leicester and Culture working group, which is looking at the possibility of a multimillion pound investment into the Sports Village at the King Edward VII site. The 43 acre site was purchased for £550,000 in 2015 and the working group have overseen substantial investment into the site which hosts Melton Rugby Club, Melton Town FC, Melton Mowbray Tennis Club and Melton Hockey Club. Since Melton Borough Council has taken over the site the usage figures have increased substantially.

Leigh has been keen to bring a commercial focus to the Council, as funding streams from Central Government are being withdrawn, and the Council is currently drafting plans for how this policy can replace those previous revenues, essential for providing public services to you. Equally, outside of the Council, Leigh supports local businesses and employers. He was heavily influential in helping to secure a £35,000 grant for a local business from the European Union’s LEADER programme.

One of Leigh’s keen interests is local campaigning and working with the community. He has been successful on many planning appeals while upholding the public interest - for instance in promoting and saving rural pubs across the Borough. Leigh has also managed to secure several houses which are prioritised for local young people and families trying to get on the housing ladder, without having to leave their local community."
