Statement to voters

I aspire to be the first Labour Party Member of Parliament for North East Cambridgeshire, to bring real change to those that live here and show that there is another way, a way that allows all to thrive.

Full statement

Once elected I will work with others to implement the manifesto continually pushing the needs of North East Cambridgeshire so that it will no longer feel let down and forgotten. My focus will be education, travel and transport into and around the constituency as well as green policies to ensure climate considerations are front and centre in decision making.

I am a self-employed Barrister specialising in Criminal law, my career path has been unconventional, working my way up through the profession. I have come to appreciate that I do not fit the usual mould, I am state educated, I had no connections to the law and my financial position limited my access to internships and training programmes. I speak my mind. I am viewed by others as being down to earth and approachable.

Since 2014 I have been based in Cambridgeshire, predominately working in the Police Stations and Courts in Peterborough and Cambridge. My practice is varied, both prosecuting and defending as well as working for the Probation Service and attending Parole Hearings.

Since 2017 I have worked with a homeless charity in the provision of a Winter Night Shelter and a hot food provision.

I have seen first-hand the effects of austerity on the public, not simply in terms of impact on crime, but access to accommodation, education, employment, social care and mental health support. My passion for effecting change by giving others a voice drives my desire to be a Member of Parliament.

I believe this is a constituency in which minds can be changed; where apathy can be turned to activism. In 2017 approximately 30,000 eligible voters, didn’t vote. Together we can end the concept of a ‘safe’ Conservative seat. 2019 is the time to bring real change to the many, to do that we need a Labour MP in North East Cambridgeshire.
