Statement to voters

Jabu Nala-Hartley was born and raised in apartheid South Africa, and has lived in Oxford since 1984.

Jabu was raised by her mother who was the first General Secretary of the South African MAWU (a trade union which is now NUMSA).

Jabu resigned from Labour Party in October 2023 because of the leadership's refusal to support the call for a ceasefire, and their support for collective punishment. Jabu is proud to be part of the Oxford Socialist Independents in Oxford.

A tireless campaigner who has made a huge difference to people's lives, Jabu has a proud track record of speaking up for workers, tenants, and oppressed people locally, nationally, and globally, and was the chairperson of Oxford Labour Party.

JABU'S TRACK RECORD

Stood shoulder to shoulder with striking workers on picket lines.

• Chair of the Oxford Living Wage campaign for over six years.

Launched a campaign to help convert Covid vaccination sceptics.

• Distributed food to homes throughout lockdown.

• Campaigned for better heating in rented properties, for the eradication of mould, and repairs neglected by landlords.

• Worked with families experiencing anti-social behaviour, to help steer young people towards recreational activities and developing career skills.

• Secured council funding for Barton Football Club, for the "Women of the World" group, and for repainting murals in the underpass.

• Convened a Barton Neighbourhood Centre

meeting to highlight the cost of living crisis where Professor Danny Dorling led a public debate alongside NHS and postal workers.
