Statement to voters

Dear Neighbour This is an important election: the recovery of our villages depends on the result.

Full statement

In my time as a councillor, I’ve never known a better opportunity to help our communities. Matlock can sometimes seem very remote, but I’m born and bred in the High Peak, and you’ll not find a stronger local voice arguing on your behalf.

The pandemic has shown us the vital role played by carers and care homes. Last year took away both grandads from my children. The awfulness of it was eased by a team of amazing care assistants visiting our home. As a young man, I worked in a care home in New Mills, and that time made a deep impression on me. Supporting carers and care homes will be my top priority.

Our local schools have now re-opened, and my house feels empty during the day after having the children around for so much of the past year. I’m sure I’m not the only parent who feels that their kids have lost a chunk of their childhood. As a textbook writer, I know that a gap in learning can be a set-back, and I’m keen to see the expectations of our young people bounce back and improve. I will be a champion for our children and their parents.

There is a clear choice at this election I bring a positive approach to public service and want to work for all members of this community regardless of political affiliation. Even if you don’t normally vote Conservative, please consider lending me your vote on May 6th. Then we can work together, all of us, for a better future.

Best wishes, and stay safe,

Nigel Gourlay Conservative Candidate for Chapel & Hope Valley
