Statement to voters

I live locally with my family in Yelvertoft.

Full statement

I am standing as Labour Party candidate because I believe in doing what is right by folks who live in the Braunston & Crick ward.
I am a semi-retired film maker and television producer making entertaining and informative programmes that have sometimes changed peoples' perceptions and lifestyle. I have also seen the best and the worst of our world.
I definitely want to make sure that the young have a say in their future, having been marginalised and recently called 'ill disciplined' by the current government. Also, to help young folks in rural areas into work, strengthening transport links and making it easier for them to physically get into work. I am looking at innovative solutions that will benefit all.
I have lived and worked around farms in my youth as well as making rural affairs programming during my career. I currently manage the Schools and Universities Polo Association and have kept horses locally as well. I have always had a great affinity with the farming community.
We all want a greener, more carbon neutral environment and I believe that having farmers on side, will help greatly, in achieving this goal.
Braunston & Crick is a proud community and folks really don't like to say how they may be suffering or have suffered, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Two of the positives (if there are such things) to take from this period in our lives, are the fact that people recognise welfare for what it is and how much we appreciate it when offered. (Food banks/ Furlough etc.). Also, folks are happier to reach out and to talk about mental issues they may have, openly and honestly and that can only be a good thing.
I want to make sure that we maintain this support for people who need our help locally, for as long as they need it. We will not allow the government (and the new Unitary Authority) to penalise the poor, in their efforts to claw back what has been spent over the past year or so.
I am also happy to voice any other concerns that you may have. If you have any other issues please do not hesitate to get in touch for a chat. Contact: nigelmercerlabour@hotmail.com
