Statement to voters

I would like to briefly introduce myself and give you a background of my history.

Full statement

Not for sympathy but to highlight the fact that I have so much first-hand experiences, that it is easier for me to empathise with others and to be able to find help and offer support.

I was raised with a brother with severe disabilities. My mum suffered with mental health issues and consequently I became a young carer, spending lots of time visiting both in hospital while struggling with issues myself. I became a mum at the age of 17 and I’m pleased and proud to say I have two amazing sons who work hard, and I also am pleased to say that I have a beautiful granddaughter now also.

After my brother passed away in 2015 I felt passionate about using my time to help in the community wherever needed. I have been heavily involved with organising events such as the Batley festival, Heckmondlight and the great get together. I have organised summer fairs for residents on my estate and Christmas lunches, helping people in the local community connect with others and make new friends. I have volunteered as an NSPCC school service volunteer delivering workshops and assemblies to both key stage one and key stage two children. sadly, there is an increase in need to remind children that they have the right to say no and that there is always someone to turn to if they feel unsafe.

I am part of the North Kirklees interfaith group and have worked with refugees, sign posting them to different services and helping them become active in the community. I am also a volunteer co-ordinator with the Royal Voluntary Service. Before Covid, I was running intergenerational groups helping senior people and children connect with each other.

Most recently I have opened a community café which provides opportunities for people to gain work experience and build confidence. It also provides a place for support groups to meet regularly, and other activity sessions will be available.

One of the main issues that I want to tackle, is the lack of provisions and support for families since many of the Sure Start Children’s centres have closed. I was once a crèche worker at the centres and it was evident how vital these places were for families. They were a lifeline for many people. When this service was taken away, there was nothing put in place to replace it. I have now set up sensory play UK which allows families to bring their children for some much needed “time out” from the stresses that life brings.

If I am elected, I will fight for better support for families, better support for older people, better support for people dealing with mental health issues, better support for vulnerable people and better support for victims of crime.
