Statement to voters

Like many of you, the NHS is in my bones.

Full statement

I am a surgeon and one of three generations of doctors who have served the NHS continuously since it began in 1948. My dad was an RAF medic in the war who joined the NHS when it started, and my son is an A&E doctor.

Our NHS has a brilliant and dedicated workforce of over one million people. We need a government that listens to them. But after 14 years of a Conservative government our NHS is on its knees, and is in need of intensive care. Babies born today ought to live to a great age, with the amazing scientific discoveries happening every day, but in parts of our country life expectancy is falling; this should terrify us all. The solutions are political, not medical, and that’s why I want to be your MP. With your vote, I would become one of the few doctors in parliament.

Throughout Suffolk including Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, our farms and factories produce food which feeds the nation, but under the Conservative government, farmers have lost out. The reality is there is no food without farmers, and we need a government that listens to our concerns about the future of farming and the workforce that work hard to produce our food.

After 14 years of the Conservatives, we are all worse off. Taxes are at a 70-year high, mortgages are up, and prices are up. We need economic stability to protect families, give businesses the confidence to invest again and make sure our high streets thrive.

The Labour Party has changed and we are ready to lead the change our country needs. Labour will stabilize the economy, cut NHS waiting times, increase the number of dentists and GPs, secure our borders, cut energy bills, put police on our streets, invest in schools, and protect our environment.

We need a serious leader and an end to the revolving door of unelected prime ministers. Sir Keir Starmer is a good honest man with a distinguished legal career. He is the leader this country needs – he is simply the best choice for Britain. The only serious choice.

With your support Labour really can win in Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket. Now is the time for serious decisions.

It is in the spirit of service that I write to you today, with the promise to put constituency and country first. Together we can turn the page, start to rebuild Britain and change our country. If you put your trust in Labour, we will deliver a brighter future. It would be the honour of my life to serve as your MP.

Please get in touch and consider joining the campaign. If you have not already done so, make sure to register to vote. In Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, every vote will count.
