I moved to Nancledra (Towednack) in 2001, having run a charity running accredited training programmes and arts & media projects for the LGBT+ community in Brighton. Two years later I got a job as Media Development Coordinator with Creative Kernow, Cornwall’s Creative Industries Agency.
So, apart from living and working here, how does any of that qualify me to stand for Cornwall Council? Well, I have transferable skills:
I started out as a performer, then retrained as a writer/director at Bournemouth Film School. As an Equity activist, I’ve been a member of the Women’s, LGBT+ and now Standing Orders Committee.
A few years ago, after a career break to be a carer, I needed a “real” job, not easy for a woman in her sixties. Until I retired last year, I worked as Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer for Ludgvan Parish Council. So whilst I may not have prior experience as a Councillor, I have worked 30 hours/week handling Council’s day-to-day business and gaining the requisite qualifications. My favourite parts of the job involved walking the footpaths & bridleways and working alongside volunteers in the community garden.
So, that’s me. I’m asking you to vote me onto Cornwall Council because I have a background in creative thinking and community development, and because we desperately need more women’s voices to speak up and speak out on behalf of Cornwall’s increasingly diverse communities.
