Statement to voters

My name is Irshad Akbar - and I want to be your local councillor.

    Full statement

I am standing to be your new local councillor in the by-election on the 16th September.
I’ve lived in the area for my entire life. I progressed from an apprentice engineer to a lecturer at Sheffield College and now I help businesses access the support they need to grow and become sustainable.

I’m passionate about giving people – particularly young people from our communites – the tools they need to succeed. I’ve helped set up an after-school club, a mentoring programme for young people, a disability support group, the local Scouts group, and various other activities for our area’s young people. I am one of the original founder members and current coordinator of the BAMER Covid 19 Action Group, and I am influential in establishing a hub that will support all community organisations to become sustainable and grow.

If you elect me, I promise to put YOU first.
Here are three reasons why I hope you’ll vote for somebody new and different this time:
    1. I will roll up my sleeves and deal with litter, fly-tipping, and graffiti to put pride back in our area.
    2. Our community needs to be safe for everyone. I will push the police and council to do more to tackle anti-social behaviour.
    3. I really care about giving our youngsters opportunities to succeed. I want to see more done to improve skills, education, and support for local businesses.
