Statement to voters

I want to take the leadership skills, experience and courage I have shown in 36 years of political life, and use them to follow Kevan Jones as a strong Labour voice for North Durham.

Full statement

I have been a Labour Party member since 1988, serving at every level from the grassroots up, through 12 years as a councillor, standing for parliament in Tory seats in 2001 and 2005, to a total of 6 years on the National Executive Committee, where I have played a leading role in turning Labour back into a winning party. I am 52, married with sons aged 12 and 18. I overcame a very serious neurological disease, which left me unable to walk for a year, and resultant disability, to become a very active Labour campaigner again. This has made me an even more passionate champion of the NHS. I also care deeply about tackling poverty and inequality and have professional experience of fighting for inward investment and strong regional industrial policies. I am a key supporter of Labour Friends of Israel and work hard to ensure that Israel’s interests are represented within my party.
