Full statement
My wife and I moved to Hundon nearly four years ago. I play golf, cricket, bowls and mentor businessman to keep me busy but I am now ready to again put my shoulder to the democratic wheel
I have a range of experiences and skills that I can contribute to our community.
I have run small charities and been a parish councillor.
I spent 20 odd years in the RAF, as an aircraft engineer, was the IT and quality director of a computer chip company, and then the CEO of an IT support company which I grew from 4 people to over 80 in the UK and Sri Lanka in six years before selling the company.
I have been the chairman of a branch of the Federation of Small Business, a member of the Greater Cambridge Partnership, a member of the East of England Development Agency migrant workers steering group and an independent member of Cambridgeshire’s Police Authority.
In 2009 I was elected as a Cambridgeshire County Councillor in a marginal division on the fringe of Cambridge. In 2011 I became Leader of the council.
Representing the council I was a founding non executive director of the Cambridge and Counties Bank jointly owned with a Cambridge college and led on its formation.
I sat on the overview and scrutiny panel and then chaired the Local Government Shared Services a joint venture with Northamptonshire covering IT, HR, Pensions.
During my time as Leader I constructively challenged the status quo resulting in reduced costs, less bureaucracy, more member involvement and better outcomes for the public. I instigated and led on the Cambridge North rail station, the Kings Dyke rail crossing, the Ely southern bypass and £20m investment in broadband. I took my cabinet to Wisbech and St Neots to make it more accessible to the public, first time ever out of shire hall.
I am as happy speaking to large forums as I am giving TV and radio interviews or canvassing on a one to one basis.
