Statement to voters
Hi, I’m John Hannah.
Full statement
I'm standing in the 2026 Scottish Parliament elections to put power where it belongs: with the people of Scotland.
I've lived in the Bathgate constituency all of my life. Bathgate is in the Central Scotland and Lothians West region.
I've been a Business Analyst for 25 years, working in business change in Banking, Insurance and Pensions across the UK and Ireland, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, India and the US.
I believe independence isn’t a slogan — it’s the practical route to making decisions in Scotland’s interest. With the powers of a normal country, we can take control of our own energy future, keep more of the value created here, and build an economy that delivers security for ordinary households. Independence also means the ability to design a fairer system of support — including a minimum income approach that no longer leaves people choosing between heating and eating. And it means shaping our own foreign policy: acting with principle, prioritising peace, human rights, and Scotland’s voice on the world stage.
My politics are rooted in popular sovereignty — the idea that the people are the highest authority, not distant institutions. That’s why I back direct democracy: citizen assemblies, transparent government, and national referendums on the decisions that matter most. Too much of politics happens behind closed doors; I want Scotland to be run out in the open, with the public actively involved, not just consulted after the fact.
As your MSP, I will be a consistent, uncompromising advocate for self-determination — and for the everyday policies that independence makes possible: secure homes, affordable energy, fair pay, strong public services, and democratic control over our future.
A Parliament that serves Scotland should answer to Scotland. My commitment is simple: independence, democracy, and a Scotland where power is held by its people.
